# Pre-2018 territory snapshots
Captures of Wynncraft's guild-leaderboard API recovered from the Wayback Machine,
each carrying per-guild territory counts on the date it was taken. These matter
because the continuous capture log only begins in January 2018: for the years
before that, these snapshots are the only quantitative evidence of who held the map.
## The captures
The most valuable is **23 September 2016**, which records HackForums holding 146
territories of roughly 332 — more than double the next guild — with Libertas on 60
and UltimateXeons on 53. Libertas appears in no written account of the period as a
major power; without this capture the wiki would not know it was one.
A capture of **16 April 2018** records all fifteen territory-holding guilds as
Federation members across 384 territories, independently confirming that alliance's
membership and its total control of the map.
Later 2019-2020 captures serve as cross-checks against the exchange log.
## Limits
A snapshot is a single instant. It gives standings, not events: no wars, no
alliances, no causes, and no indication of how long a guild had held what it held.
Between two captures months apart, anything could have happened — and in at least
one case did, since HackForums lost the entire map in June 2016 and had recovered
by the September capture.
