The death of the Federation on 10 November 2018 ended the longest period of total map control in the recorded history of Wynncraft guild warfare. The alliance was not defeated from outside: one guild's departure at around 3 AM EST triggered a cascade that emptied it within a day[1].
Background
The Federation formed around 16 February 2018 from the merger of the Coalition remnant and War Syndicate's remains, founded and led by Drew1011[2]. It wiped HackForums on 19 February, won the Coalition Civil War on 20 March[3], and then held the entire map for 8 months and 25 days, interrupted only for roughly three days in March. At its height it counted 37–40 member guilds[1].
Strain had shown all year. Fantasy left in late May 2018 and fought the bloc across the map all summer — over 220 territories were exchanged[4] — before rejoining on 29 October[5]. The Hive left about a month before the end, then Odysseia[6]. Several separate wars between member guilds ignited on 1 November 2018: the pre-collapse fraying[7].
The collapse
At around 3 AM EST on 10 November 2018 one guild left the Federation, and the rest cascaded out within a day[1]. Imperial's exit 'snowballed into a major attack together with the enemy alliance', Ascended Kitten of Imperial wrote the next day; Arisen followed; and after 14 hours of constant warring the Aesir Pact guilds — Sins of Seedia, DiamondDeities and IceBlue Team, the Federation's last defenders — quit, ending it[6]. The Aesir Pact died with the alliance it defended.
Drew1011 posted a tribute three days later: 'What killed Federation was... internal affairs.'[1]
Aftermath
The community timeline describes the winter 2018–19 interregnum simply: 'After Fed all guilds keep to themselves with valk owning most of Gavel'[8] — Valkyrie's guilds, Kingdom Foxes and Imperial, were the interregnum's top territory gainers[9]. SOL was created in the post-collapse chaos, and Luna formed on 14 February 2019 to counter it[10], opening the alliance wars of 2019.
