Legio, recorded in full as Legio Praetoria, was one of the earliest Wynncraft guild alliances, founded in early 2015 by KnightOfValor, Imperial, Nether's Ascent and Kangronomicon. It broke up in mid-2015 and was afterwards cited repeatedly as the standard example of an alliance destroyed from within.
Four guilds founded Legio in early March 2015 — KnightOfValor [KnV], Imperial [Imp], Nether's Ascent [TNA] and Kangronomicon [Fuq][1] — among the first alliances of the early guild era. A 2016 recollection put its size at "2-5 (6?) guilds back when guilds were the newest most popular toy in the playground"[2]. It appears never to have had an alliance thread on the guild subforum[3].
History
The alliance was governed by a written instrument. Discussing its membership a year later, a participant wrote: "According to the legio alliance contract when imperial allied with fox they were also a legio guild. But I dont know if those two events happened before, after or in between knv and imp left legio."[4] The alliance Imperial formed with the Kingdom of Foxes on 2 June 2015 became Valkyrie[5]; three days later, on 5 June 2015, Imperial and KnightOfValor left Legio, and "the alliance collapses a month later due to internal strife"[6].
Whether Legio ran community events was disputed on the forums two years afterwards. A poster credited it with the first guild ball; Drew1011 answered "First guild ball was hosted by Ordo. Legio never hosted events" and added that he had asked two former members who both said the same[7]. Yuno F Gasai replied that "the week I joined Imperial there was a Legio event organized by Knv" and "there was literally an event on the day I joined legio"[8]. The dispute was never resolved.
Afterlife and reputation
Concordia's expansion in autumn 2015 included the destruction of "the remnants of Legio"[9] — the last event under the name.
In 2016 Legio had become the community's stock example of an alliance killed by its own members. "Legio only lost its territory when it collapsed from the inside"[10]; "Legio fell because of internal affairs"[11] — a line written in the same breath as the same diagnosis for Ordo Malleus. The comparison was also used against HackForums at its height: "I gotta admit, legio was well planned. The only difference I see is that hax is more a 1 man allience so they cant really collapse and have internal conflict as easily as legio"[12]. The alliance had also drawn a run of hostile threads in its own time: "Why have there been so many anti legio alliance threads", a poster asked in the same period[13].
