History

The founders

The Coalition never announced itself on the forums: no founding thread, roster or declaration was ever posted^[1]. The guild subforum's run of Alliance-prefixed threads jumps straight from Amnesty (30 August 2017) and the Emperium of Wynn's second thread (4 September 2017) to Revolution (25 April 2018)^[2][3][4][5]. By late 2017 alliance diplomacy had moved to Discord, and the Coalition is the first major Wynncraft alliance with no forum existence at all. The founding is dated only to October 2017; no day was ever recorded^[6][7].

Drew1011, one of the founders, placed the proposal "in mid October"^[8] and, closing his account of the Gavel Invasion on 25 December 2017, wrote that "67 days after the planning had begun, victory had been achieved"^[9] — placing the start of planning at about 19 October 2017.

The four founders joined in order: "It was Fox and Phx that cofounded it, with Spr (the guild Fishie had made) being the third guild to join, and Snt being the fourth."^[8] Drew1011 gave the alliance's purpose as his own design: "From there we would grow our alliance with the sole purpose of bringing down War Syndicate."^[8]

A Discord message from the KingdomPhoenixes parliament channel, forwarded to Drew1011, in which the guild's leader raises "a temporary alliance" with Kingdom Foxes "purely for the sake of elimination of BCr". Drew1011 presented this as the proposal that produced the Coalition.^[10]

The four founding guilds can be described from their own threads, and two of them were barely older than the alliance:

• KingdomPhoenixes [Phx], led by AurumKitsune as "Queen of the Phoenixes", was "officially established" on 23 Sep 2017 — one month before the Coalition — and described itself as having "arose from the ashes of a dead guild"^[11]. It was a splinter of Kingdom Foxes^[7] and had been a War Syndicate member, leaving that bloc weeks before co-founding the Coalition^[8].
• Gilded Sparrows, founded by Killerfish and announced on 17 Nov 2017, was newer still: "Founded in the midst of autumn... although the guild itself is taking its first steps, its leader is not a novice at what he does."^[12] Its founding thread postdates the Coalition's founding by a month, though guilds routinely predated their threads. Drew1011 wrote that he did most of its warring on its owner's account because "Fishie was the only one in the guild"^[13].
• House of Sentinels, founded 2 Jul 2016 by Pyrias, was led by Pretzule from at least Apr 2017; that spring it turned deliberately toward warring — "Due to a few reasons our guild will also be focusing on warring with other guilds and maintaining territory"^[14] — after a year as a community guild in the Aurelion alliance^[15].
• Kingdom Foxes is the oldest of the four, founded in 2014 and a co-founder of Valkyrie in 2015 under LoveLusting^[16]. It was also a member of the Emperium of Wynn in the months before the Coalition formed^[17]; Drew1011, its Viceroy and the Emperium's Shadow Advisor, wrote that by mid-October, when the Coalition was proposed, "the Emperium was completely dead at that point"^[8].

The founders were one social circle before they were an alliance. Killerfish sat on House of Sentinels' council alongside Pyrias and Pretzule^[18], and had helped write the Halcyon alliance thread that June alongside Drew1011^[19]; Drew1011 posted congratulations on both the KingdomPhoenixes and the Gilded Sparrows announcement threads^[20].

Rise to map dominance

The Coalition took control of the Wynn Province on 23 Nov 2017^[7] — in Drew1011's words, the day "the Coalition first took control of every territory on the Wynn mainland", not of the whole map^[13]. A labelled map of that day shows the mainland held entirely by Coalition guilds, with only Titans Valor's island territories and one other guild's holdings outside it.

He attributed the alliance's growth to War Syndicate's standing rule against attacking the province of Wynn: "the War Syndicate had given us over 100 territories on a silver platter... they divided Gavel amongst themselves, and we divided Wynn amongst ourselves"^[13]. Three events immediately preceded the invasion: Fantasy's defection from War Syndicate to the Coalition^[22], Fantasy's capture of Corkus from Paladins United, and the revival of HackForums, whose owner Drew1011 wrote he had personally recruited on the understanding that Hax would help "deal with War Syndicate" once revived^[13].

That December the Coalition destroyed War Syndicate in a four-day campaign beginning 21 Dec 2017 — "they wiped ws off the map on Christmas day," as a participant on the losing side put it^[23] — and held "all 349 territories on the map" by the end of 25 December^[9]. The day-by-day course of that campaign is set out on the War Syndicate page. Another participant disputed the wipe, holding that the two blocs merged instead^[24].

At the declaration of war on 21 December 2017 the alliance numbered fourteen guilds: DeathReapers [DxR], Dishonored [TOH], Fantasy [Fux], HackForums [Hax], Hall of Fame [HoF], Hippies of Snuggles [HOS], House of Sentinels [Snt], Immortalish [Smd], Kasai Shinrai [Two], Kingdom Foxes [Fox], KingdomPhoenixes [Phx], LE Flowers [LEF], Necronomicon [Feq] and Serpentem Empire [SNK]^[25]. Paladins United joined during the war — "the only addition to our roster during the war", negotiated with its owner Olinite and with Slayne, "the one doing most of the warring for PUN", days after Coalition guilds had taken Corkus from them^[9] — and Imperial was admitted after it on a second vote^[26].

Dividing the map, and the split

Two internal fractures followed. Necronomicon and Hippies of Snuggles left during the post-war division of territory in late December 2017, over their allocations; Drew1011 disputed both guilds' grounds for leaving, and neither guild's side was ever recorded^[26]. On 11 January 2018 the alliance's Discord server was deleted; Drew1011 declined to give the cause^[26].

The alliance's fatal defect, in its founder's own words, was that it had divided Gavel but not Wynn: "In Wynn, Coalition guilds could attack enemies, but not allies. (This oversight would come back to cause major problems for the alliance, and eventually be the main reason for its demise.)"^[26] A proposal to divide Wynn was first made by Drew1011 and dropped; AscendedKitten of Imperial then re-proposed it and called a vote, which passed^[27]. A working map drawn during that exercise recorded the alliance's holdings guild by guild.

The final allocation ran: Hax ~64, PUN ~50, HoF 38, Fox 36, Snt 36, Imp 32, Fuq 25, Phx 24, LEF 20, HoL 19, ERN 17, SNK 9, Smd 3^[29]. No other pre-2019 Wynncraft alliance's per-guild allocation was ever recorded.

The split

On 16–17 Feb 2018 (the community guild-timeline image dates the split to the 16th^[6], the Timeline document to the 17th^[7]), five member guilds — HackForums, Paladins United, House of Sentinels, Emorians and Kangronomicon — left over map disputes and formed Alliance Alliance together with Fantasy and Necronomicon, declaring war on their former alliance and beginning the Coalition Civil War^[30]. The departures came within an hour of the allocation's announcement: "Hax, PUN, Snt, Fuq, and Emorians [ERN] left and made their own alliance combined with Fux and Feq. They attacked the rest of the Coalition, and had the map before the night was over."^[27]

Drew1011 disputed later claims that the departing guilds had tried to resolve the dispute first, writing that "there were no straightforward and direct attempts to solve the issues beforehand"^[27]. The departing guilds' own account of that period was never recorded.

The Coalition remnant merged with War Syndicate's remains into the new Federation, ending the Coalition as an entity^[24]; the civil war itself ran until the Federation took control of the map on 20 Mar 2018^[30]. A participant described the sequence: "When Coalition was taking its toll, Fux and SDU were offered to join a new alliance together, The Federation."^[22]

Even the genealogy was disputed among participants. One held that "Coa and WS merged... this was a creation of fed"^[24], while Slayne wrote in 2018: "I created Fed because I (along with some others) created Double AA."^[31]

The record

The territory-exchange log begins in January 2018, after the Coalition formed; the guilds' real join dates were never recorded, and the membership of the five departing guilds rests on their documented February 2018 departures rather than on recorded joins^[32]. The alliance posted no founding thread, member list, takeover post, invasion thread or split thread. Most of its history — the planning date, the stated purpose, the rosters and the course of the split — rests on Drew1011's storytime account, written between March and July 2018 by a founder of the losing side of the split; beyond it and the community timeline, the Coalition's third-party trace is a handful of retrospective one-liners^[33].

Membership

Legacy

Both of the great blocs of 2018 descend from the Coalition: Alliance Alliance from its defectors, and the Federation from its remnant^[30]. The Federation went on to hold the entire map for most of a year, defining the Federation era^[34] — and the Coalition's brief, total dominance became the template every later map-holding alliance would be measured against; a 2019 poster listed it alongside "Federation, Hax & Co" as one of the recurring mega-alliances of Wynn's history^[33]. It was also the last major alliance of the early guild era to leave no thread of its own: from 2018 onward the blocs announced themselves on the forums again^[3].
